The image above is from the second URL linked to in the header (in case the link doesn't always work.)  I live on Rocky Spring Road.

I was in my kitchen making breakfast shortly after 6 this morning when I saw something huge and dark passing by on the street - a Humvee.  I thought to myself, "I don't have time for martial law, I have to get to the gym!"  I peeked through my kitchen window as the vehicle slowly and quietly proceeded up the street.  Two men in combat gear were standing on the back of the vehicle and watching the neighborhood carefully as they moved along.

Realizing that it was probably the SWAT team trying to handle a criminal situation and not the army preparing to make a police state of my neighborhood, I proceeded to eat my breakfast and watch the local news.  News 8 Austin, a local station owned by Time Warner Cable, mentioned the story only as a traffic problem.

I decided not to worry.  Even though the incident is happening on my block, it's about 1500 feet away.   The blocks are very long and narrow in my neighborhood and this is going down at the West end of the street while I live near the East end.

A few minutes later, I packed up my car and made my way to the gym.  The street was blocked by a great number of law enforcement to the West but a single police cruiser to the East allowed me to pass by without incident.

I only know a few people on my street, all of whom live much closer than where this incident is taking place.  I know for sure that one home at the corner of Rocky Spring and Spring Hill, which is approximately where this is going on, is an elderly couple.

Ah, local news. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 10:38:01 AM EST
It's kind of amusing that the local news presented a SWAT team in your neighborhood only as a possible traffic problem. I'd expect them to have an on-location person providing such details as "One of the SWAT members just went 'round to the back and said something about 'going' into his radio." You know, because that's what the people want to see.

I do hope the SWAT team does its job and that no one is injured.

Update: It's Over by zarathus (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 11:40:37 AM EST
A 60 year old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.   That's all I can find out from the news sites so far.

We had that almost exact situation here by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #3 Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 12:16:53 PM EST
On Rt 50 on the Eastern Shore a few weeks ago a guy in his 60's killed his wife and then himself. No one knew if he was alive or not, so the swat team surrounded his house and blocked Rt 50. Local news treated it as a traffic problem.

But 404 to the beach was a zoo. Thank FSM for decent maps that allowed me to bypass all of it.

More info by zarathus (2.00 / 0) #7 Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 10:21:09 AM EST
No further info in the media other than that the resident committed suicide.  However, this morning I was talking to my next door neighbor and gained some interesting info.  My neighbor was the first resident on my street when the neighborhood was constructed in the 60's and she told me that Tuesday's incident was the fourth suicide in 30 years on the street.  I'm trying to work out if four suicides in 30 years in ~30 households is statistically significant.
